Should I cover rattan garden furniture over winter?

If it stays outside, yes. Resin rattan shrugs off rain, but its weave traps water, leaves and droppings, and years of sun turn the strands brittle. A waterproof cover with vents keeps that off while damp air still escapes.

Do I measure with the cushions on?

Your call. Leaving the cushions out over winter? Measure with them on. Bringing them in? Measure the bare frame. We size the cover to the set the way you'll leave it.

Can one cover go over the table and chairs together?

Yes. Select the Square, Round or Rectangle Dining Set shape, then tuck every chair under the table and measure the set like that. Table and chairs count as one.

What keeps the cover in place?

A drawstring at the hem, as standard. Tighten it under the edge of the set and the cover stays put. For a firmer hold, snap buckles clip round the sofa or table legs, while eyelets take a cord to the rattan frame or a fixed post. Elasticated corners offer a different route to a close-fitting hem.

Will the cushions get mouldy underneath?

Why Does a Universal Rattan Furniture Cover Never Fit?

Because ready-made covers for rattan are sold by set type and seat count, and two sets with the same label are rarely the same size.

A '4 seater cube set' cover is one fixed box in centimetres. A '6 seater round' is another. Yet every furniture range picks its own sofa depth, arm width and table height, so two corner sofas sold as six-seaters can be a long way apart.

The nearest size is the best a ready-made cover can offer. Too big, and loose fabric slumps into the corner of an L-shaped sofa and fills with rainwater. Too small, and it stops short of the ground, leaving chair legs standing in the wet.

Where a cover is tight, over the corner of an arm or the edge of a cube table, the fabric takes the strain all winter. That is where it wears through first, and where seams under constant strain open up.

What Does a Rattan Furniture Cover Protect Against?

Rattan left bare takes its wear in three places: the weave, the cushions and the frame.

Sun on the Weave

Summer sun bleaches synthetic rattan and dries the strands out. Over a few seasons they go chalky, then brittle, then crack.

Rain Through the Weave

Rain does not run off woven furniture. It soaks through the gaps onto the frame and into whatever sits underneath.

Damp Cushions

Seat cushions left on the set drink up rain and dew, and stay wet for days after the sky clears.

Green in the Gaps

On a shaded patio, algae settles into the damp gaps of the weave and spreads unseen.

Bird Droppings

Droppings land on the seats and the table top, then set hard in the weave, out of reach of a cloth.

Leaves and Grit

Which Rattan Set Do You Have?

Find the shape nearest your rattan, then measure it as it really stands, as a single piece or as the full set pushed together. Shapes fall into three groups: sofas, chairs and dining sets.

L-Shape Sofa With Arms

A rattan corner sofa: two lengths of seating joined at a right angle, arms at both ends. The guide covers both lengths and the join.

Straight Square Arm

A straight rattan sofa or settee with the square, boxy arms most rattan is built with. Two seats or three, measured end to end across the arms.

Sofa Chair With Arms

The single armchair from a rattan lounge set, with the same deep seat and box arms as the sofa beside it.

Recliner With Footrest

A rattan recliner, footrest raised or tucked away. Measure whichever way you'd like it covered.

Dining Arms Straight Back

Square Dining Set

The rattan cube set: a square table with chairs or footstools slid in underneath. It is measured as one block, chairs in.

Holds On at the Hem

The standard tie-down is a drawstring hem, cinched beneath the edge of the set to keep the cover in place. To fix it to the furniture, add snap buckles round the sofa or table legs, or choose eyelets, so the cover can be tied to the frame or to a solid post nearby. Elasticated corners give you a second route to a close hem.
