Are the benches covered too, or only the table?

Both. The benches are part of the cover, whether they are bolted to the frame or stand on their own legs. How far it drops is your call: just below the seats, or right down to the ground. Put it in the quote tool's notes box. Each shape's measuring guide shows where to take every size.

Is this a tablecloth?

No. It is a weather cover for the days and months nobody is sitting at the table. Take it off to eat, and put it back on to keep rain, frost, sun and bird droppings off the wood.

Can you add a hole for a parasol?

Yes. Pick the parasol hole option in the instant quote tool, then tell us where the hole sits on the tabletop. The pole can then stay up with the cover on.

Are your picnic table covers waterproof?

Completely, fabric and seams alike. Our HydroLok® seam sealing stitches each seam and then seals it on the inside, so nothing leaks along the stitching. Will it stay put in bad weather?

The standard tie-down is a drawstring hem, and it cinches in under the benches. Somewhere exposed, choose a stronger tie-down instead: snap buckle straps under the tabletop, eyelets for tying to a fixed point, or elasticated corners on a rectangular or hexagonal table.

Can you make covers for several picnic benches, for a pub garden or campsite?

Yes, and they don't have to match, because every cover is made for its own table. For more than a handful, contact us with the list and we will price the lot together.

Does damp get trapped underneath?

Far less than under a loose sheet. Vents built into the cover give damp air a way out and keep rain from getting in. Covering a wet table, or a sharp frost overnight, can still leave some condensation, so let the wood dry before it goes under when you can. More on condensation and airflow .

How long will a picnic table cover last?

Why Do Universal Picnic Bench Covers Never Fit?

Universal picnic bench covers are sold by a label: 4 seater, 8 seater, 6ft, 8ft. None of those labels measures the benches or the legs, and those are what decide the fit.

A picnic table has three sizes at once: the tabletop, the benches either side of it, and the legs, which splay wider at the ground than at the top. Two tables sold as 8 seaters can differ in all three.

Cut a cover to the tabletop and it stops short above the seats, so the bench ends soak. Cut it to the outer edge of the benches and the middle sags into a dish that collects rain.

One buyer's cover was sold as an 8ft picnic table cover. It arrived far too big for the table it was bought for, the straps holding the slack down tore within weeks, and it ended up bunched underneath.

The number on the packet counts the diners. Did anyone measure the table?

What Does a Picnic Table Cover Protect Against?

A picnic table cover keeps rain, frost, sun, birds and falling leaves off the bare timber of the tabletop, the benches and the legs. Most picnic tables are softwood, and it suffers most in the wet months between one summer and the next.

Rain in the Grain

Rain finds every slat gap and soaks into the cut end of each board. Bare pine stays wet for days after a shower, long after the top looks dry.

Green on the Slats

Damp, shaded slats grow a green film of algae, and moss follows in the gaps. The benches go first, because they sit lowest and dry last.

Frost in the Timber

Water held in the end grain freezes and expands overnight. Each thaw leaves the splits a little wider, and the next rain gets further in.

Sun on the Tabletop

The tabletop takes the full sun all summer. The wood dries out, turns silver-grey and opens fine cracks along the grain.

Birds Overhead

A picnic table under a tree is a perch with a target underneath. Droppings land on the one surface you eat from and bake on hard in the sun.

Leaves and Sap

Leaves, seeds and sap drop between the boards and stay there. Packed in wet, they hold water against the wood all winter.

Which Picnic Bench Do You Have?

Rectangle (Attached Benches)

The classic pub garden bench: a long table with a bench either side, all fixed to the same A-frame legs. The guide takes the total length and depth, the depth of the tabletop and the seat height, so the cover steps down from the table to the seats.

Rectangle (Detached Benches)

A table with two freestanding benches on their own legs, pushed in either side. Measure the three pieces as they stand when you want them covered, and one cover goes over all of them.

Hexagon

A six-sided top with a bench along every side. It is measured point to point across the benches and across the top, with the width of one side and the spread of the legs at the base.

Round

A round top with four curved benches spaced around it and gaps between them. The guide takes the full diameter, the diameter of the top on its own, the diagonal across the benches and the drop from seat to tabletop.

Held Down Under the Benches

The standard tie-down is a drawstring hem. It cinches tight under the benches. If the table stands somewhere exposed, choose a stronger tie-down: snap buckle straps that fasten underneath the tabletop, or elasticated corners on a rectangular or hexagonal table.

The tabletop is the first thing the sun finds, so the fabric is UV-stabilised to stand up to it. Vents let damp air out, so the slats underneath dry between showers instead of staying wet.
