How do I measure my garden bench for a cover?

Pick your bench first - armless, backless, with arms, curved or traditional park bench - then measure that shape. Each one has its own measuring guide on this page with every measurement lettered on a diagram, and a Download PDF button if you want a copy to take outside. A is the total width, B the total depth and C the total height; a bench with arms adds D, the height to the top of the arm, and an armless bench adds D, the height to the seat. Measure the widest part of each, which on a bench with arms or park-bench ends is usually not the seat.

Is this a 2 seater or a 3 seater bench cover?

Neither - it is a cover for your bench. A two-seater from one maker can be wider than a three-seater from another, so we do not size by seat count or size band. You measure the width, depth and height of the bench you have, and the cover is drawn to those. That is what stops the ends hanging off or coming up short.

Can you cover a backless bench?

Yes - it is one of the five shapes on the configurator. A backless bench is a single low plane, so the cover is a shallow box that drops over the seat and pulls in under it. There is no back for water to run down and no gap above the seat for it to sit in, which makes it the simplest bench to cover well.

Do you make covers for a traditional park bench with a curved back?

Yes. The Traditional Park Bench shape is drawn for exactly that: a back that sweeps in a curve and cast or scrolled end frames that stand wider than the seat. You give us the overall width across the ends, the depth, the height to the top of the back and the height to the top of the arm, and the cover is shaped to follow the curve rather than tenting across it.

Do you make covers for a curved or banana bench?

Yes. Bench Curved is one of the five shapes on the configurator. A banana bench bows in a crescent with the back and arms following the same arc, so a rectangular cover leaves a triangle of slack at each end. Ours is drawn to the arc. Measure the width tip to tip across the outside of the arms, the depth at the deepest point of the curve, the total height, and the height to the top of the arm; the measuring guide for the shape shows each one lettered on a diagram.

My bench has a seat pad. Should I leave it on under the cover?

If the pad lives on the bench all year, leave it on and measure with it in place, because it raises the highest point and adds depth the cover has to clear. If the pad comes indoors for winter, measure the bare bench. Either way this is a cover for the bench, not a cushion cover: it goes over the pad, not around it.

Is a custom garden bench cover fully waterproof?

Ours is. Both fabrics are 100% waterproof and UV-stabilised — NylonSafe® 420D nylon, or the heavier PVCArmour® 1000D PVC for exposed sites — and both use HydroLok® sealed seams, stitched and sealed internally so water cannot get through the seam lines. Not every cover sold as waterproof is: a fabric advertised as breathable is not 100% waterproof, which is why ours are not breathable and we fit airflow vents instead. Read more about our fabrics →

Will water sit on top of the cover?

On a bench with a back it can, if the cover is loose. The cover runs from the top of the back down to the front of the seat, and the seat sits under that run with nothing holding the fabric up. A cover made to the bench's own height and depth keeps that run taut so water sheds off the front; a loose one sags into the gap and holds it. A backless bench has no run and no gap.

How does the cover stay on a bench in wind?

A bench sits low and open on legs, so wind gets under it before it gets over it. As standard the cover has a drawstring hem that pulls in under the seat rail, so there is no loose skirt for the wind to get hold of. If your bench sits somewhere exposed, swap the drawstring for elasticated corners, snap buckles, eyelets or a combination when you configure the cover. See the tie-down options .

My bench isn't one of the five shapes listed. Can you still make a cover?

Yes. Any shape, any size — the five on the configurator are the common ones, not the limit. Lutyens benches, tree seats and companion seats with a table between all get drawn to their own measurements. Contact us with photos and any measurements you have, and we will draw it.

How long does a custom garden bench cover take to arrive?

Current lead time is 2–3 weeks from design approval to delivery. Nothing is held in stock — the cover is drawn to the measurements you send for your bench. You get that drawing back to approve before anything is cut, so production starts once you are happy with it. Timescales are estimates and vary with how busy we are, so check with us before ordering if you need it by a particular date.

How long does a custom garden bench cover last?

Ten years or more with a good fit and a little care. Fit is most of it: a cover drawn to the bench has no slack to flap, chafe or pool water, so the fabric is not being worked every windy night. Both fabrics are UV-stabilised, and the warranty runs three years on NylonSafe®, our premium waterproof nylon, or five on PVCArmour®, the heavy-duty PVC for exposed sites, doubled with the optional KuvrPlus warranty extension. Brush off leaves and droppings when you see them, and let it dry before it goes in the duffel bag for storage.

What warranty comes with a garden bench cover?

A custom garden bench cover is a waterproof cover made to the measurements of one bench: yours. The five shapes on the configurator are the common ones, not the limit. We cover any bench, any shape, any size — if yours is not listed, send us a photo with the measurements and we will design it from that. A bench is long and shallow. Four, five or six feet wide, and often under two feet deep. So the cover has to fit those proportions rather than a box. That is why we ask which bench you have first, then its width, depth and height.

Why Do Universal Garden Bench Covers Never Fit Right?

A size-band cover is sold by seat count, and a seat count is not a measurement. Benches vary by maker and so do the covers, so one seller's two-seater cover swallows a three-seater bench while another's comes up short on the two-seater it was named for.

Too long, and the surplus folds over at one end and traps water in the fold. Too short, and the rain gets underneath and onto the seat. Either way there is slack, and slack is what the wind takes. Which is how a brand-new cover ends up pinned down with a brick and an offcut of timber, like the one in the photo.

A back makes it worse. Look at the photo and ask where the water goes after one light shower. Down the back, into the dip where the cover has sagged onto the seat, and there it stays, a puddle pressing on the fabric until it finds a way through.

What Does a Garden Bench Cover Protect Against?

Six things damage a garden bench across the year: rain, damp, sun, wind, frost, and birds and sap. The timber and the end frames take all of it, because a bench has no cushions to take it first.

Rain & Standing Water

Rain lands on the seat and sits in the gaps between the slats. On a bench with a back it also runs down the back and collects where the back meets the seat.

Damp, Algae & Mould

A slatted seat never really dries out between showers. The gaps hold the damp for days. Green algae starts in the gaps, then spreads across the shaded end of the seat.

Sun & Silvering

Teak, acacia and oak bleach to silver-grey in the sun, and they dry out as they go. Fine cracks open along the grain. The strip under the arm proves the point: keep the sun off the timber and it keeps its colour.

Wind

Wind on its own does nothing to a bench; what it carries does. A bench sits low and open on legs, so driving rain, grit and leaf litter get under the seat as well as over it. Once the wind drops, all of it stays in the joints.

Frost & Winter

Wet timber freezes, and the ice opens the grain into a split that runs the length of a slat. On a cast-iron end the same freeze cracks the paint around the bolt joints, and rust gets in behind it.

Birds & Sap

A bench goes where the view is, and that is often under a tree. Droppings dry hard onto bare slats and sap sets in the grain. Both mark timber that has lost its finish.

Which Bench Do You Have?

Pick the one that looks like yours on the configurator. The measuring guide for that shape appears as soon as you do.

Bench With Arms

A back, and an arm at each end. The arms stand proud of the seat, so the cover has to clear them and then drop straight to the ground. No gap under the arm for rain to blow into.

Armless Bench

A back and no arms, so the seat is the widest point. The cover is a simple run from the top of the back over the seat, with nothing to snag and nothing to lift.

Backless Bench

A seat on legs and nothing above it. The cover is a shallow box that drops over the seat and pulls in under it. The easiest bench to cover well: nothing above the seat, so nowhere for water to collect.

Traditional Park Bench

Timber slats on cast or scrolled end frames, with a back that sweeps in a curve. The ends stand proudest, so the cover is shaped to the frames and follows the curve rather than tenting across it.

Curved Bench

A seat that bows in a crescent, with the back and arms following the same arc. A rectangular cover leaves a triangle of slack at each end; this one is cut to the arc and sits flush all the way round.

What Happens to an Uncovered Outdoor Bench?

Split slats, rust and green algae do not only happen to a bench left bare. They happen under covers too — ones that sagged, blew off in the night, or held the damp against the timber. A bench is often the last thing in the garden anyone thinks to cover, and one of the first things the frost reaches.

We have two of the covers, one at each end of the veranda. They fitted well and I have attached them to the wall to prevent them from blowing too much in the wind. They are clear so we can still see out into the garden. Unfortunately you cannot see the far end cover as out rather overgrown Kentia palm is in the way. If anyone would like to buy it please let me know, that’s the palm!

Nothing available locally (Cyprus), found the firm via internet search. As expected shipping and customs clearance took some time with transit via France and Italy but courier was the first delivery to my house door in a small village, usually I have to collect. As for the item, at first look delighted. Robust with sealed seams and drawstring to prevent wind disturbance.
