A custom garden footstool cover is a waterproof cover for one particular outdoor footstool or ottoman, shaped and sized to match it. It sits flat on the top, close on every side, and stops just short of the ground.
A footstool has the busiest summer of anything on the patio. It gets dragged over for your feet, borrowed as a spare seat, then parked by the wall with a tray of glasses on it.
Most of what makes it comfortable is on top: a padded seat or a loose cushion. That is the part that drinks the rain. A fitted cover keeps it dry between uses, then lifts straight off when you want your feet up again.
Because a ready-made cover comes as a box in four or five sizes, and footstools don’t.
The best sellers on Amazon are squares of about 56, 61, 64 or 69 cm, roughly 43 to 46 cm tall. Several are listed as side table covers in the same title.
A garden footstool is usually low, and often longer than it is wide. In a tall square box, the spare height slumps onto the paving, and the hem sits in every puddle.
Go a size down and the hem rides halfway up the sides. A square cover on a long footstool manages both at once: baggy at the ends, tight across the middle.
So a cover bought to keep the cushion dry becomes one more thing to straighten after every shower.
Left bare, a garden footstool takes the weather on the very part you sit on or rest your feet on. This is what it does there. If your footstool came with a matching sofa, the sofa gets a fitted cover of its own from our outdoor sofa covers.
Water that sits on a padded top for more than an hour works through the seams and into the foam. The fabric dries by lunchtime; the foam inside does not.
Damp foam stays dark and warm, which is exactly where mildew grows. Often the first sign is the smell, and by then the foam needs replacing.
UV fades the top first and turns the stitching brittle. A seat cushion can look three summers old after one bright one.
Rain leaves marks on an uncovered wooden frame, and teak left in hot sun turns grey and bleached.
Bird droppings are acidic. Left to bake on a fabric top, they leave a stain long after the mess is scrubbed off.
Pollen and sap hold moisture against the fabric, and grit grinds at the fibres like sandpaper every time someone sits down.
Garden footstools come in three basic shapes, and each has its own measuring guide. Match yours to a shape in the quote tool first, then measure the footstool against that guide.
The same length on every side. Rattan cubes, padded seats on an aluminium frame, and the ottoman sold to match a corner sofa all sit here. Measured by height, length and width.
Longer than it is wide: the long, low footstool at the end of a daybed, or the ottoman that runs along the front of a sofa. You measure its height, its length along the long side, and its width.
A drum or a pouf. Woven rope footstools, round padded seats and chunky outdoor poufs. Measured by height and diameter, so the cover hugs the curve with no empty corners.
A season or two in the open, close up.
It is made to your footstool’s exact measurements, three of them for a square or rectangle, two for a round one. A small allowance lets it slide on. It sits level on the seat and ends just above the ground, with no spare fabric gathering round the base.
HydroLok® is how the seams are finished: stitched, then sealed on the inside. That seal stops rain finding a way in along the stitch line. The fabric is just as waterproof. There are two fabrics to choose from. NylonSafe® is a premium waterproof fabric for home and light commercial use. PVCArmour® is heavy-duty, for exposed sites and commercial use.
The standard tie-down is a drawstring hem. It gathers in beneath the footstool’s bottom edge. On an exposed spot, such as a roof terrace, swap to one of the other tie-down options. Square and rectangular footstools can take elasticated corners; any shape can take eyelets, or snap buckles where there are legs.
Built-in vents let trapped damp escape, so the cushion is never shut in with its own moisture. They double as EZ handles, grab handles built into the vent structure, for lifting the cover off. We bought these clear tarpaulins to enclose our open terrace area, and they have been a great addition to the house. The clear plastic lets in plenty of light, so it doesn't feel dark or boxed in. We have two of the covers, one at each end of the veranda. They fitted well and I have attached them to the wall to prevent them from blowing too much in the wind. They are clear so we can still see out into the garden. Unfortunately you cannot see the far end cover as out rather overgrown Kentia palm is in the way. If anyone would like to buy it please let me know, that’s the palm!

Initial placement of order a problem quickly resolved by the firm. Have been needing a hot tub cap for sometime as the insulated top allowed rainwater to flow.
