How do I measure my outdoor sofa for a cover?

Pick your shape first, then measure that shape. Every shape has its own measuring guide on the product page, with a diagram and each measurement lettered on it. There is a Download PDF button if you want a printed copy to take outside with you. Measure with the cushions sitting where they will actually sit under the cover, because they set the height and the depth the cover has to clear.

Do you cover a corner sofa in one piece or in sections?

One piece, over the whole sofa as it stands. A modular sofa can be arranged more than one way — as an L, or as two separate runs. We draw the cover to the layout you measure, so set the sofa out the way you want to keep it, then measure it like that.

Can you make a cover for a curved or half-moon sofa?

Yes. Curved is one of the shape families in the shape selector when you configure the cover — choose it and you get Crescent, Semicircle and Horseshoe. A curved sofa has no straight edges, so a rectangular cover is slack across the middle and tight round the arc whatever size you buy. We draw the cover to the arc you measure.

Should I leave the cushions on underneath?

Whichever way you plan to leave them. Cushions add height and depth, so if they stay on, the cover has to be drawn to clear them. Measure with them sitting where they normally sit. If you would rather lay them flat on the seat, or take them indoors, measure the sofa in that state instead. The cover is drawn to fit whatever you measure.

Is a custom outdoor sofa cover fully waterproof?

Ours is. Both fabrics are 100% waterproof and UV-stabilised — NylonSafe® 420D nylon, or the heavier PVCArmour® 1000D PVC for exposed sites — and both use HydroLok® sealed seams, stitched and sealed internally so water cannot get through the seam lines. Not every cover sold as waterproof is: a fabric advertised as breathable is not 100% waterproof, which is why ours are not breathable and we fit airflow vents instead. Read more about our fabrics →

Will water sit on top of the cover?

On a loose cover it will. The fabric spans from the top of the back down to the front edge, and the seat sits lower than both. That leaves a void under the span for a loose cover to sag into, and water collects in the sag. A cover drawn to your sofa has no slack in that span, so the fabric stays taut and rain runs off the front instead of standing on it.

What about the gap underneath the sofa?

That is your choice. Some people want the cover to carry on down to the ground, so the legs and the space beneath are enclosed. Others want it to stop at the bottom of the seat frame and leave the legs on show. Tell us which you want and we draw the hem to that line, and you will see it on the design drawing before anything is cut. How does the cover stay on in high wind?

A drawstring hem is fitted as standard. It runs through the hem so it can be pulled tight around the base of the sofa. On an exposed site you can choose more holding power instead. The options are elasticated corners, grommet eyelets for tying down to a fixed anchor, snap buckles that strap underneath or around the frame, or snap buckles and elasticated corners together. Snap buckles give the strongest resistance to wind lift, and pairing them with elasticated corners keeps the fit tailored. See the fastening options →

Yes. Any shape, any size — the ones in the configurator are the common ones, not the limit. Send photos and measurements through the free design service and we will draw it. If you would rather talk it through first, get in touch .

How long does a custom outdoor sofa cover take to arrive?

Current lead time is 2–3 weeks from design approval to delivery. Nothing is held in stock — the cover is drawn to the measurements you send for your shape. You get that drawing back to approve before anything is cut, so production starts once you are happy with it. Timescales are estimates and vary with how busy we are, so check with us before ordering if you need it by a particular date.

What warranty comes with an outdoor sofa cover?

Three years on NylonSafe®, our premium waterproof nylon, or five years on PVCArmour®, the heavy-duty PVC for exposed sites. Adding the optional KuvrPlus warranty extension when you configure the cover takes those to five and ten years. KuvrPlus covers fabric degradation, seam failure and manufacturing defects for longer. Over a sofa on its own, the cover traces the back and the arms and drops to wherever you want it to stop — the legs, or the ground. Over a corner or a modular set, it has to turn every corner and hold that same line all the way round. That is why we ask which shape you have first.

Why Do Universal Outdoor Sofa Covers Never Fit Right?

A size-band cover is a box with a single height. It has to clear the back, which is the tallest part of the sofa. Over the seat, which sits far lower, the fabric bridges a void with nothing underneath it.

That span is where rain collects. There is no fall in the fabric and nothing under it to shed the water, so it simply sits — directly on the seams.

A corner sofa makes it worse. The two runs are rarely the same length or depth, so a rectangular cover can only bunch where they meet — the lowest point, where the water already is.

What Does an Outdoor Sofa Cover Protect Against?

Six things damage a garden sofa across the year: rain, damp, sun, wind, frost, and birds and sap. The cushions take the worst of it, because they hold whatever lands on them.

Rain & Standing Water

Rain runs off the back of a sofa and lands on the seat, not the ground. The seat is the one part built to absorb — foam, wadding, fabric.

Damp & Mould

A garden sofa never really dries out between showers. Foam and fabric hold the damp for days. Mould starts in the seams and the piping, where it sits longest.

Sun & Fading

Outdoor upholstery goes chalky and pale, and it does it unevenly. Lift a cushion after a summer and the strip underneath is still the colour the rest of it used to be.

Wind

Wind drives rain sideways, into the back of the sofa and up underneath it. It carries grit that works into the weave and the seams. And loose cushions end up on the lawn.

Frost & Winter

Damp cushions freeze solid, and the foam inside breaks down where the ice forms. Water sitting in the frame joints expands as it freezes and works them loose over a winter.

Birds & Sap

Sap and droppings land on the cushions and go into the weave, where they set. Bird mess is acidic, so on rattan or timber it marks the finish as well.

Which Shape Do You Need?

L-Shape & Corner Sofas

Two runs of seating meeting at a corner, armless or with arms, and a chaise end at either side. Measure each run, the depth of each, and the height to the ground.

Curved Sofas

A continuous arc rather than an angle — crescent, semicircle or horseshoe. Measure around the curve rather than across it, then the depth and the height.

U-Shape Sofas

Three runs of seating around an open middle. Measure each run, the gap between the two ends, and the height.

Straight Sofas

One run of seating, two seats or ten, armless or with an arm at each end. Give us the width, the depth and the height.

What Happens to an Unprotected Garden Sofa?

Cushions hold water for days once it gets into the foam. NylonSafe® is a premium waterproof fabric for home and light commercial use. PVCArmour® is heavy-duty, for exposed and commercial sites. Both carry HydroLok® sealed seams — stitched and sealed internally so water cannot get through the seam lines.

Stays in Position

A sofa gives wind two ways in: the slack over the seat, and the open space under the frame. Drawn to your sofa there is no slack, and the drawstring hem pulls in under the frame. Elasticated corners, eyelets and snap buckles are there for exposed sites.

Built to Stay Out

A sofa cover comes on and off more than most, every dry spell all summer. EZ handles are built into the airflow vents, so it pulls off easily. Those vents move damp out of the cushions instead of shutting it in. Reinforced load points, waterproof zips and a duffel bag are standard.
