Custom Rabbit Hutch Cover & Run Covers — Case Study

Custom clear covers for Emma's new rabbit run — right down to black hardware we don't stock as standard.

Emma came to us in May with a specific request: custom clear panel covers for her rabbits' new run, finished in all-black hardware we don't normally offer. Here's how we sourced the hardware, designed the covers around her run, and delivered three made-to-fit Ultra 50 clear covers ahead of her deadline. It's the same process behind every custom rabbit hutch cover we make.

What is a custom rabbit run cover?

A custom rabbit run cover is a clear PVC panel made to the exact size of your run, fixed with turn buttons or eyelets so it can be rolled up or taken down without tools. We make them to fit any run, hutch or enclosure — see our custom rabbit hutch covers.

22 May

A request we don't usually get.

Emma first messaged us through live chat back in May. She was building a new run for her rabbits and wanted made-to-fit clear panel covers — with one particular request: she wanted turn button fixings in black, not the silver we keep as standard. She had a clear vision for her run, had done her research, and had found these fixings were available in a black colour.

Emma

"Hello, I am looking at ordering some bespoke size clear panel covers for my bunnies' new run due at the end of next month. I am wondering if you are able to offer black turnbuckles rather than silver or gold? And could you advise the size of these please? Many thanks in advance."

"Hi Emma, we can source these — a black version is available. I've attached some images, along with some further information on sizing. Is this what you had in mind?"

Late May – early June

Working out the spec.

From there it was a few messages back and forth to get the details right. Emma sent through her rough sizes, and we talked her through the fixings and the fabric. She'd first hoped to have the covers completely clear, with no edging at all. But clear PVC comes with a durability trade-off, and Duncan talked her through it.

Duncan — Kuvr

Duncan - Kuvr

"Clear PVC is what we call an unsupported material — there's no reinforcement layer inside it. That's exactly what keeps it so clear. The trade-off comes at the stress points, like the fixings. With no reinforcement there, the material can suffer — especially in cold weather, when it stiffens and is more prone to damage under load. That holds even where we double it back on itself to form a thicker hem. I've attached a couple of examples so you can see what I mean. For that reason we really recommend a coloured reinforced PVC hem around the perimeter. It gives much greater strength around the fixings. Given you're going for black hardware, my instinct would be a black hem to tie it all together — but it's entirely your choice."

Examples of the damage clear PVC can suffer around the fixings without a reinforced hem — exactly what the coloured hem is there to prevent.

Since Emma's run was being painted white, she ultimately decided on a white hem to suit it rather than the black.

Emma

"I've had a think re the clear edging. My run will be painted white and I was hoping the clear would have worked, however I am a bit sceptical with regards to the durability. Please could you advise what the width measurement is on the hem — and could you pop a few made-up samples in the post so I can see the finish?"

15 June

Emma sends her drawings.

With samples on their way and the finishes still to settle, Emma turned her attention to the measurements. This was a slower project than most — she was waiting on her run to be built, so she took her time over the fabrics and finishes and refining the sizes. By mid-June she'd sent over her own scaled drawings, one for each cover. She came unusually well prepared; most customers just send a few photos and rough measurements, and we take it from there — just look at the back-of-napkin sketch Jorden started with when he came to us for a custom outdoor kitchen cover.

Emma

"Please see attached drawings with measurements. We have covers: A/B — 1 cover, C — 1 cover, D — 1 cover. I'm also happy to wait for my run to arrive to reconfirm the measurements."

Our first scaled diagrams.

We turned Emma's drawings into our own scaled production diagrams. Our early design was drawn with a black hem to match the hardware, as we'd originally proposed. There was also a query over whether panels A and B were one piece or two, since that changes how the centre fixings are arranged.

Duncan — Kuvr

Duncan - Kuvr

"Hi Emma, I've attached our initial diagrams. One thing to check before we go any further: are panels A and B two separate panels, or a single piece? If they're two, we'll need to revise the diagrams — adjusting the fixing placements and the tie-back positions along the top edge."

As it happened, Emma's clarification meant our first diagrams were accurate as they stood, with no revisions needed at that stage.

Emma

"A/B cover is basically one panel — one baton in the middle, not two that join together. Looking at the drawings you guys have done for me, they look spot on for what I'm after."

Mid-June to mid-July

Then we waited — for Emma's run.

Then came the longest stretch of the whole project — and none of it was manufacturing. Emma's run was still being built, and its delivery slipped from the 6th of July to the 13th.

Emma's avatar — her lop-eared rabbit

Emma

"We have a week's delay on our run and it's not due to be delivered and installed until the 13th of July now. Once it's with me I will remeasure and send over all details."

Rather than cut covers to provisional measurements, we made the call to hold off until the run was installed and could be re-measured on site. It's a key point, and one that comes up on many custom jobs: it's always better to measure the finished item than to work from a plan. Whether it's the size specs on a garden furniture supplier's website or, in this case, a rabbit run built to order, quoted measurements don't always match the reality. We always recommend the covers are cut to fit the real thing — not a drawing that might still change.

Duncan — Kuvr

Duncan - Kuvr

"No problem at all regarding the delay. I think it's sensible to wait until everything is installed so that you can re-check the measurements before we finalise anything."

16 July

The run's in. Final measurements.

With the run installed and painted, Emma re-measured and sent over the final drawings — and, just as importantly, a photo of the finished run. That photo grounds everything in reality. Until now we'd been working back and forth from drawings; the moment we could see the run itself, we could see exactly what we were making. The earlier question over whether covers A and B were one piece or two was answered at a glance, just by looking at it. It's why we always ask for photos: a drawing gives you the numbers, but a photo gives you the context to make sense of them.

"Everything went to plan and my bunny run is in place and is perfect! I can now confirm the attached drawings are the final ones for the covers from the actual measurements on my run."

20–21 July

Every detail locked before cutting.

This is where a custom cover is really made — before it's cut. We redrew our scaled diagrams to Emma's final on-site measurements and worked through the details that decide whether a clear cover sits right. The fabric was settled: Ultra 50 clear PVC, the heavier of our two clear options.

Emma's avatar — her lop-eared rabbit

Emma

"I can confirm 45mm edging will be fine please — I don't mind if you have to go a few mm over rather than under as I'm hoping the edging 100% covers my battens flush. Black turn buttons I would require please. Cover edging — white I would require please — on the drawings it says black."

Our standard hem is 40mm, but Emma asked for 45mm so it would sit flush over the battens on her window frames. We placed each turn button exactly where she wanted it, and a couple of finer points were quicker to talk through — so we sorted those by phone before sending the final diagrams over for her approval.

Duncan — Kuvr

Duncan - Kuvr

"Thanks for confirming 45mm will work, with a little tolerance to go slightly over rather than under so it sits flush over the battens. And I've amended the turn buttons to black and the edging to white — I've attached the amended diagrams for you."

The amended production diagrams — covers A/B, C and D, to Emma's final measurements.

The hem set to 45mm, the turn buttons corrected to black, the edging to white — every fixing placed exactly where Emma wanted it, and every change made on a diagram she had in front of her before anything was cut. That's the whole point of our free design service: to catch anything that isn't right while it's still just a drawing. It's also why we can stand behind every cover with our First Time Fit Guarantee.

22 July

Approved, and into production.

Emma had a week booked off work and was hoping to have the covers fitted during her time off. That timing fitted nicely with where we were in production, so with the designs approved, her order went to the factory — and the black turn buttons landed with us the same day.

Duncan — Kuvr

Duncan - Kuvr

"The guys in production have confirmed we can get this delivered before next Friday. The black turn buttons should be arriving with us today, so that won't delay things."

Today

Emma's run is covered.

Three Ultra 50 clear covers. Cut to Emma's own measurements, with the hem set flush to her battens, the fixings placed where she wanted them, and hardware we sourced specially in the black finish she was after — every dimension approved before a single panel was cut.

No standard sizes. No guessing whether a flat sheet will sit right over an odd shape. The covers themselves are 100% waterproof — clear rabbit run rain covers that keep the wind out too, without shutting out the light. If your run, hutch or enclosure needs clear covers, it starts with a few photos and measurements. We'll design them and send you the scaled diagrams. Nothing is cut until you've approved every detail — and if it doesn't fit when it arrives, we remake it free. Get your custom rabbit hutch cover.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure a rabbit run for custom clear covers?
Send us photos and the measurements you have, and we'll turn them into scaled diagrams for each cover you need. Emma's run took three separate clear covers to enclose it. If you're not sure what to measure, send the photos first and we'll come back with exactly what we need for your specific run.
What's the best clear fabric — Flexi 30 or Ultra 50?
Emma chose Ultra 50 — a heavier clear PVC that stands up to year-round outdoor use, with a 2-year warranty when you add KuvrPlus, our paid warranty extension. Flexi 30 is a lighter, lower-cost clear option for less exposed spots. Compare custom rabbit hutch cover fabrics.
Can I choose the fixings and the colours?
Yes. You tell us where you'd like turn buttons and where you'd like eyelets, and you choose the hardware and edging colours. For Emma we sourced black turn buttons — a finish we don't keep as standard — alongside a white edging and a 45mm hem to sit flush over her battens. If there's a specific finish you're after, ask us. Turn buttons vs eyelets.
What if my covers don't fit?
Every cover comes with our First Time Fit Guarantee — if it doesn't fit, we remake it free. In practice, the design-approval stage catches issues before anything is cut, which is why Emma's covers fitted her run first time.
